267 YOUTH GRADUATE FROM THE OBASANJO COLLEGE

 


COORDINATOR DELIVERING AN OVERVIEW OF THE COLLEGE


From the Western Area Rural District in Newton, 267 young people (104 female and 163 male) has graduated with certificates from the National Youth Commission’s sponsored Obasanjo Skills Acquisition College. The courses offered during the one year training programme were computer Software and Community/ Youth Development Studies.  
Speaking at the ceremony, the principal of the college Alhaji Suliaman Fofanah explained that the college was established  in 2005 with funds from the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the NILISA project adding that the college has now being accredited by the National Council for Technical Vocational and other Academic Award (NCTVA ) to offer certificate and diploma courses. He noted that the focus of the college is to capacitate young people with the necessary skills and technical knowledge which according him will help in addressing the high level of unskilled and unemployed youth in the country.
Mr. Fofanah continued saying to make the college more relevant the 2016/2017 academic year will see an introduction of new courses to meet the needs of the students and the community. These courses he mentioned will be Building and Construction, Electricals and Electronics and Public Health. He further explained that, since the inception of the college to date, it has trained over 1000 young people  specializing in Social Work and Development Studies, Business Administration and Entrepreneurship, Computer Studies, Mass Communication , Project Writing, et-al.
Dr. Dennis Sandy in his statement as guest speaker advised the graduates to use their skills gained meaningfully and refrain from all forms of violence and drug abuse.
Giving the keynote address, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr. Bai Mamoud Bangura congratulated all the graduates and encouraged them to be change agents for national development. He noted that his Ministry is working closely with the National Youth Commission and other line ministries in developing programmes geared towards empowering young people for sustainable development. He promised his continued support for the college especially addressing the issue of payment of lecturers and the refurbishment of the college amphitheater.
The distribution of certificates which climaxed the event was done by the Commissioner of Youth, Mr. Anthony A. Koroma, the Director of Youth and other dignitaries.
